Some initial insights and lifestyle changes from using the Oura Smart Ring Gen3
In March 2023 I was inspired by a YouTuber to try out the Oura Smart Ring Gen3. The ring is a biometric tracking device aimed at helping users to improve sleep quality. With a monthly subscription, users gain access to an extensive amount of biometric data and insights captured by the sleek and stylish ring. I was initially hesitant to buy the ring given the price tag however I can confidently say after 10 months, it was worth the investment. Here are five insights I’ve gained so far after 10 months of use:
- Invest in Sleep Hygiene: Prior to using the ring, I took sporadic interest in improving the quality of my sleep through changes to my physical environment. After a few weeks of wearing the ring, I became motivated to improve the temperature and air quality of my bedroom, invest in black out curtains and splurge on nicer bedding. I embraced sleeping in a cool, dark and quiet bedroom which led to higher quality of sleep.
- Mind Alcohol Consumption: I learned that consuming alcohol lowered my average heart rate variability (HRV) overnight and worsened the quality of my sleep. This has helped me to more consistently moderate and further cut back alcohol consumption with benefits that go beyond improving my sleep.
- Time Your Meals: When I ate a heavy or spicy meal close to bedtime, I was more restless during sleep as tracked by the Restfulness sub-metric. This insight has encouraged to keep more consistent meal times and to avoid heavy meals right before bed.
- Lean Into Physical Activity: I found that I slept more deeply and soundly when I was active earlier in the day. My activity levels also positively impacted my overall Readiness score.
- Follow a Consistent Bedtime Routine: When I follow a gentle evening wind down routine before bed, my Resting heart rate tends to be lower than if I went to bed abruptly.
If you’re on the fence about buying an Oura Ring, I’d encourage you to take the leap and do it! The Oura Ring is a prime example of how knowledge is power especially in the realm of physical health. The ring has become my daily health companion that encourages me to pay attention to my body’s signals and to make lifestyle changes that benefit me.
